Located at the southern end of the Sydney Harbour Bridge in The Rocks, Cumberland was contracted by the City of Sydney to upgrade this historic public toilet and provide an enhanced modern public asset incorporating ambluant and accessible facilities

Originally designed by architect William Henry Foggitt in 1915, this facility was part of a scheme to integrate the newly realigned Cumberland Street with George Street and was completed in 1916. The design, in the inter-war Free Classical style, included concrete steps with sandstone balustrades, men’s public toilets, retaining walls, lighting, seating, and landscaping.
Over time, the structure was modified in the 1970s to include female toilets, and the southern approach of the Sydney Harbour Bridge was constructed above it in the 1920s.
The newly upgraded facility, which now operates 24/7, includes a range of modern improvements:
Enhanced male and female toilets with new ambulant cubicles, a baby change table, and additional handwashing basins
A new unisex accessible toilet with a baby change table
Updated sanitary fixtures and surface finishes featuring
New Terrazzo Slab Partitions with Stainless Steel Cubical Doors
Custom Armstrong F-Plank Metal Ceiling System
Improved lighting and ventilation
Extensive Restored sandstone and brick façade
